About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS)
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and man-made disasters through emergency responses, ambulance and first aid services, family reunification, essential drugs distribution, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services.
ERCS operates a comprehensive structure consisting of 14 regional branches, 40 zonal branches, 180 woreda branches, and 5,871 Kebele Red Cross Committees. The organization runs disaster risk reduction programs focusing on food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building, with the aim of creating resilient households and communities.
ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers, and the communities it serves.

Project Background
The project "Strengthening Institutional Disaster Preparedness in Ethiopia" aims to enhance institutional capacities and coordination mechanisms for Disaster Risk Management (DRM) in Ethiopia, with a focus on Anticipatory Action (AA) and Early Response (ER). This project is implemented in collaboration with the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) and the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC) at targeted ERCS regional and zonal offices in Tigray, Oromia, Somali, and Afar regions.
