Organization Overview
Caritas Gikongoro and the Justice and Peace Commission are services of the Catholic Diocese of Gikongoro, located in southern and western Rwanda, covering the districts of Nyamagabe, portions of Nyaruguru, Nyanza, Huye, and Karongi.
Caritas Gikongoro Background
Caritas Gikongoro was established in 1993 with a mission to assist the needy by:
- Increasing income opportunities
- Improving health outcomes
- Promoting socio-charitable works
- Promoting a culture of peace
The organization's vision is to build a society where human dignity and the integral development of all people are promoted according to evangelical values.
Caritas Gikongoro operates through three main departments:
- Social Department
- Health Department
- Development Department
Justice and Peace Commission Background
The Justice and Peace Commission of Gikongoro Diocese works to construct lasting peace through:
- Establishing rule of law
- Education for justice, peace, and reconciliation
- Defense of human rights, especially among the poor
- Denunciation of injustices
- Large-scale dissemination of Catholic Church social teaching
