About the Organization
Water For People is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that works with people and partners to develop innovative and long-lasting solutions to water, sanitation, and hygiene problems in developing countries. The organization strives to continually improve, experiment with promising new ideas, and leverage resources to multiply its impact.
Project Background
Water For People has secured funds from the U.S. Government to finance the Isoko y'Ubuzima WASH project, which operates in 10 districts of Rwanda: Rwamagana, Kayonza, Ngoma, Kirehe, Nyagatare, Ruhango, Nyanza, Nyamagabe, Nyabihu, and Ngororero. The project aims to increase and sustain equitable access to safe drinking water and sanitation services to improve health and contribute to economic development.
Project Objectives
A key project objective is to build the capacity of private operators to identify, reduce, and manage water losses, ensuring financial viability of private operators and improving water services to customers.
Current Situation
The Isoko y'Ubuzima project has introduced the District-Meter Area (DMA) approach to water loss monitoring, piloted in 10 selected water supply systems across the intervention area. Through customer inspection and mapping, analysis revealed that approximately 60% of customer water meters are over 5 years old, which may cause inaccurate water consumption readings. This affects billed volumes and increases non-revenue water loss.
To address this issue, the project has purchased 10 water meter testing kits and trained private operator staff on their use. The project now plans to conduct meter testing for customers connected to the piloted water supply systems to ensure accuracy.
