About the Role

This position offers a great opportunity for career growth. You will specialize in making and repairing upholstered furniture with soft, padded textile coverings, such as armchairs, sofas, and bedheads. This involves choosing, measuring, cutting, fitting, and sewing fabric and leather materials to create hand-crafted furniture pieces.

Key Responsibilities

• Upholster furniture pieces by attaching fabric using glue and staples, hand-sewing, or machine-sewing as needed
• Apply and install batting, foam, poly-filler, and cut fabric to wooden frameworks using power and hand tools
• Add embellishments such as buttons, decorative details, trim, tassels, and other finishes to complete orders according to specifications
• Measure and cut fabric or leather pieces to precise sizes and dimensions using patterns, stencils, and industrial cutting tools
• Inspect wooden frameworks for defects and make repairs as needed prior to upholstery application
• Operate portable hand-sewing equipment, nail guns, hobnail and tack hammers, hot-knife cutters, and other industrial equipment
• Read work orders and maintain a database of production status for communication with clients and in-house sales managers
• Determine fabric inventory and place orders with textile partners; provide status updates about fabric availability
• Discuss complications or assembly line slow-downs with supervisors and brainstorm solutions for increased productivity

Requirements

• FSLC / NCE / HND / OND qualification
• 5–20 years of work experience in upholstery or furniture making
• Working familiarity with tools such as tack pullers, chisels, mallets, and stretchers
• Ability to estimate costs of materials, products, and services
