Surface Mining Drilling Rig Operator (Coal / Quarry)

About the Role

African Pits and Quarries Limited is seeking an experienced Surface Mining Drilling Rig Operator to support blast hole and production drilling activities across our surface coal mining and quarry operations in Enugu State. The successful candidate will operate drilling rigs safely and efficiently in line with approved mine plans, safety standards, and production targets.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate surface drilling rigs (rotary, DTH, or top-hammer) for blast hole and production drilling
• Drill holes in accordance with approved blast patterns, bench designs, and mine plans
• Accurately position and align drilling rigs using survey layouts
• Monitor and adjust drilling parameters (depth, pressure, rotation speed, penetration rate)
• Conduct daily pre-start inspections and routine equipment maintenance
• Ensure drilled holes meet required specifications (depth, diameter, angle, spacing)
• Maintain accurate drilling and shift production records
• Work closely with blast crews, surveyors, and maintenance teams
• Strictly comply with mining health, safety, and environmental standards

Requirements

• Minimum of SSCE, Trade Test Certificate, OND, or equivalent qualification
• 3–5 years' experience operating surface drilling rigs in coal mining or quarry environments
• Proven experience in blast hole drilling for open-pit operations
• Basic mechanical and troubleshooting skills
• Strong safety awareness and teamwork skills
