Position Overview:
- The Heavy-Duty Truck Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of our fleet of diesel-powered commercial vehicles (e.g., tractor-trailers, straight trucks, and associated equipment). This role is critical to maintaining Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance, ensuring vehicle safety, and maximizing fleet uptime in a fast-paced logistics environment.
- Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services, including oil changes, lubrication, and filter replacements.
- Diagnose and repair malfunctions in critical systems:
- Engine: Major diesel engines (e.g., Cummins, Detroit, Volvo, Paccar).
- Drivetrain: Transmissions (manual, automated, automatic), clutches, drive axles, and differentials.
- Braking Systems: Air brake systems (including chambers, valves, compressors), hydraulic brakes, and ABS diagnostics.
- Steering & Suspension: Front ends, air ride suspensions, leaf springs.
- Pneumatics & Hydraulics: Air systems for brakes and accessories, hydraulic systems for lifts and tailgates.
- HVAC: Cab air conditioning and heating systems.
- Utilize diagnostic software, electronic tooling, and laptop-based programs to troubleshoot complex electrical and electronic faults.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
- Perform road tests to verify repairs and identify intermittent issues.
- Conduct thorough Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Inspection Reports (DVIRs) as per DOT regulations.
- Perform Annual DOT Inspections and prepare vehicles for third-party inspections.
- Ensure all repairs meet federal, state, and local safety standards.
- Adhere to all company safety policies, including proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe handling of fuels and chemicals.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Accurately document all work performed, parts used, and time spent on repair orders in the Fleet Management System (FMS).
- Manage inventory of parts and tools; communicate parts needs to the supervisor.
- Assist in mentoring and training apprentice mechanics.
- Certification: A valid Heavy-Duty Commercial Transport (310T) license or equivalent provincial/state certification (e.g., ASE Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck in the U.S. is highly preferred).
