Description du poste
About the Organization
The African Center of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD) is recruiting a Short Term Expert in Climate Services to strengthen its team.
Context and Background
Climate change poses a major challenge to socio-economic development globally, with African countries facing particular vulnerability. Key impacts include:
- Water stress and scarcity
- Food insecurity
- Diminished hydropower generation potential
- Loss of biodiversity and ecosystem degradation
- Increased disease burden
- Infrastructure destruction
- High costs of disaster management due to increased frequency and intensity of droughts, floods, extreme heat, and landslides
African vulnerability stems from multiple existing stresses, including low adaptive capacity and inherent exposure to climate change due to geographical conditions. Reliable, science-based information on climate change and variability is critical for building resilience, saving lives, halting desertification, and improving livelihoods.
Global Framework for Climate Services
The Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) was established in 2009 at the World Climate Conference-3 organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to strengthen the production, availability, delivery, and application of science-based climate prediction and services.
International Commitments
The Paris Agreement specifically references climate services, calling on parties to strengthen "scientific knowledge on climate, including early warning systems, in a manner that informs climate services and supports decision-making." This position supports partner countries in developing credible and reliable climate information and services.
