General Nurse at Tenwek Hospital

Job Purpose

The jobholder is responsible for providing nursing services within the respective unit to ensure patients and clients receive quality care in line with hospital policies and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess assigned patients' needs and develop appropriate care plans
• Organize and coordinate nursing care and medical treatments
• Monitor and record vital signs accurately
• Document all assessments and interventions provided
• Administer enteral nutrition via nasogastric tubes and other enteral feeding methods
• Administer fluids and monitor patients' input and output
• Administer medications to patients as prescribed
• Perform personal hygiene care including bed baths, oral care, and other hygiene tasks
• Maintain unit cleanliness through daily routines including bed making and station cleaning
• Prevent pressure ulcers through regular turning and patient engagement activities
• Perform wound care as needed
• Practice infection prevention techniques, including proper handwashing and waste handling
• Insert intravenous access for patients as required
• Perform catheterization procedures
• Assist patients with ambulation and mobility
• Administer nebulization treatments
• Prepare patients for discharge and facilitate their safe return home
• Hand over patient care information during shift changes
• Maintain a clean, safe, and pleasant work environment
• Maintain familiarity with legal implications of nursing practice and ensure compliance
• Promote effective interpersonal and public relations
• Provide health teaching and counselling to individuals, families, and the community
• Identify research topics and participate in operational-level research activities
