Water Quality Intern

About the Role

Peace Winds Japan is seeking a Water Quality Intern to support water treatment operations and ensure safe water supply to refugee and host communities in Garissa, Kenya. This position involves managing water treatment systems, conducting quality testing, and coordinating with WASH teams to maintain international water safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, repair, and rehabilitate water treatment facilities while analyzing equipment requirements to ensure optimal functionality
• Ensure daily chlorination of water from refugee boreholes by coordinating timely delivery of disinfectants in appropriate quantities
• Oversee and periodically inspect water treatment systems and establish procedures for effective, continuous operations
• Perform regular maintenance on water treatment systems, including servicing and repairing dosing pumps and maintaining system cleanliness
• Monitor operational issues and address malfunctions promptly to minimize treatment process interruptions
• Organize and manage water quality data monitoring systems and conduct regular tests from intake through treatment stages, tap stands, storage reservoirs, and household level to ensure UNHCR and international standards compliance
• Submit purchase requests for equipment, reagents, and treatment chemicals; maintain inventory of necessary items for testing and operations
• Coordinate collection of water samples from boreholes, households, water taps, schools, and health facilities
• Conduct physical and bacteriological analysis of drinking water for camps and water sources; coordinate and manage laboratory testing
• Prepare operation manuals for water treatment plants in refugee camps
• Collaborate with WASH teams and coordinate with partners on water quality information sharing and household water storage promotion
• Produce weekly and monthly water quality reports
