Critical Care Nurse at Tenwek Hospital

Job Purpose

The jobholder is responsible for providing nursing services within the Critical Care unit, ensuring that patients receive quality care in line with hospital policies and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess each assigned patient's needs and develop appropriate care plans
• Organize and coordinate nursing care and medical treatments
• Check and record patient vital signs accurately
• Document assessments and interventions provided
• Administer nutrition via nasogastric tubes and other enteral feeding methods
• Administer fluids and monitor patients' fluid intake and output
• Administer medications to patients as prescribed
• Perform personal hygiene care including bed baths, oral care, and grooming for bedridden patients
• Perform daily unit maintenance tasks including cleaning, bed making, and housekeeping
• Prevent pressure ulcers through regular repositioning and mobility activities
• Perform wound care and dressing changes as needed
• Practice infection prevention and control techniques, including proper handwashing and waste handling
• Insert intravenous (IV) access for patients as required
• Perform catheterization procedures
• Assist patients with ambulation and mobility
• Administer nebulization treatments
• Prepare patients for discharge and facilitate safe transition home
• Provide comprehensive handover of patient information during shift changes
• Maintain the unit effectively according to hospital policy with minimal supervision
• Maintain infection prevention guidelines and best practices
• Ensure workplace safety by maintaining a clean, safe, and pleasant environment
• Understand and comply with legal and ethical requirements of nursing practice
• Promote effective interpersonal relationships and professional communication
• Provide health teaching and counseling to patients, families, and communities
• Identify and participate in nursing research initiatives and quality improvement activities
