Position Overview

The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) is an intergovernmental organization seeking an Executive Director to provide intellectual leadership in the West Africa region. This role focuses on integrated research and capacity building on social, economic, and environmental themes to address sustainable development and climate change issues.

WASCAL is a leading academic and trans-disciplinary research organization serving policymakers in West Africa with science-based advice on climate change adaptation and land use management. The organization cooperates with nearly all ECOWAS countries and many agencies and universities in the region, providing a knowledge platform of excellence for its partners while maintaining close links with other international organizations.

Job Purpose

The Executive Director shall provide intellectual leadership for integrated research on social, economic, biological, agricultural, and physical themes addressing climate change issues critical to West African development. The Director will be responsible for successful leadership and management of the organization in accordance with the strategic direction set by the Governing Board and Funders.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership

• Implement the vision and mission of WASCAL
• Implement the Governing Board's decisions on all aspects of the organization's activities
• Develop, under the guidance of the Governing Board, the necessary strategic plan for WASCAL
• Identify, assess, and inform the Governing Board of internal and external issues affecting the organization
• Foster effective teamwork between the Governing Board and the office of the Executive Director, and between the Executive Director, management, and other staff
• Represent the organization at appropriate forums
