About WASCAL
WASCAL is a research and education-focused institute designed to provide knowledge and climate services to help tackle climate change and enhance the resilience of human and environmental systems. The organization strengthens research capacity and infrastructure in West Africa related to climate change by pooling expertise from eleven West African countries and Germany: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, and Cape Verde.
WASCAL operates through its Headquarters in Accra, Ghana, a Competence Centre in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and 12 graduate schools offering PhD and MSc. programs across lead universities throughout West Africa.
Position Overview
WASCAL seeks to hire a Regional Thematic Coordinator to consolidate its position as a leading Regional Research Partner Institution in West Africa and expand into new areas of work relevant to climate science, climate services, and societal impacts.
The Regional Thematic Coordinator will be responsible for WASCAL Priority Research Theme 1: Land Use, Land Cover and Land Degradation Nexus. The position is based at the WASCAL Competence Centre in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
Reporting Structure
The successful candidate will report to the Director of Research at the WASCAL Competence Centre, who serves as the Head of Research and climate service provisions.
Research Focus
The WASCAL Research Program aims to:
- Develop qualitative and quantitative tools and models for linking bio-physical and socio-economic processes and feedbacks
- Use these models and tools to develop and analyze impact scenarios of climate change
- Assess alternative land use options to help society cope with climate variability
