About the Organization

Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is an Ethiopian civil society organization registered with the FDRE Civil Societies Organizations Agency under Proclamation No. 1113/2019. The organization is dedicated to promoting and advocating human rights through strategic legal action, capacity building, and institutional reform.

Organizational Objectives

LHR's core objectives include:

• Promoting human rights through increased participation and contribution of lawyers via trainings and capacity building activities
• Supporting lawyers nationwide and facilitating exchange of ideas, information, and experience for better human rights protection
• Litigating before courts and relevant organs to ensure protection and promotion of human rights under the FDRE Constitution and international instruments ratified by Ethiopia
• Creating awareness among justice organs about international human rights instruments ratified by Ethiopia
• Providing free legal aid services to vulnerable populations
• Influencing government policy to enact new laws or amend existing legislation for comprehensive human rights protection
• Promoting the concept of human rights defenders (HRD) among the legal profession

Current Projects and Activities

LHR implements various projects including:

• Trainings on basic human rights and strategic litigation for practicing lawyers, judges, and prosecutors
• Strategic litigation cases filed before judicial bodies
• Research and consultative workshops monitoring the compatibility of recently enacted laws with human rights standards
• Legal aid services for indigent and vulnerable groups

Partnerships

In implementing its projects, LHR engages with national and international stakeholders including the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), Open Society Foundations (OSF), and the French Development Agency (AFD).
