About the Organization
NRC is seeking to strengthen its teams in Burkina Faso with a dedicated Shelter & WASH Specialist.
Context
The humanitarian situation in the cross-border area between Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger continues to deteriorate. The deteriorating security situation has forced thousands of people from the Sahel, North, North Central, and East regions to flee to neighbouring towns. The presence of non-state armed groups and improvised explosive devices has made roads inaccessible and hampered activities.
Violence is having a serious impact on fragile livelihoods and people's ability to support themselves, while challenging already weak basic social services. More and more people are fleeing their homes in search of safety in nearby fields or villages, sometimes repeatedly.
Internally displaced persons in Burkina Faso number 2.6 million. The Sahel and Centre-Nord regions are the most affected and host the largest number of displaced people, though displacement is also worsening in the East and Boucle de Mouhoun Region. Large-scale displacement has a strong impact on already scarce natural resources, with negative consequences for both displaced populations and host communities, increasing the risk of undermining social cohesion and population protection.
Humanitarian access to populations in need and access to basic social services remain major challenges. The humanitarian space is shrinking in areas where humanitarian activities are concentrated.
Shelter and Settlements
NRC is currently focused on expanding its Shelter portfolio in Burkina Faso. In addition to offering temporary shelters equipped with emergency Non-Food Item (NFI) kits, lighting, and alternative cooking solutions for newly displaced families, NRC is expanding its transitional shelter response and innovative approaches.
