Project Background
This assignment is part of the Sustainable Livelihoods and Income Diversification through Agroforestry Project (SUSTAIN-AF), a collaboration between Inkunga Finance Plc, ADA (Appui au développement autonome), and CIFOR-ICRAF.
About Inkunga Finance Plc
Inkunga Finance Plc is a Rwandan microfinance institution providing savings and credit services primarily in rural areas. Founded in 1995 as a Savings and Credit cooperative, the institution transformed into a microfinance company in 2016 and obtained a deposit-taking license from the Central Bank of Rwanda in 2017.
Key Facts:
- Approximately 42,000 active clients
- 7 branches located in Rubengera, Bwishyura, Rusizi, Rutsiro, Nyamasheke, and Mahoko
- Recent expansion with branch opened in Kigali at Nyabugogo and additional sub-branches
- Operations concentrated in Western rural Rwanda
Since 2022, Inkunga Finance Plc has collaborated with ADA to pioneer forestry and agroforestry loans in Rwanda. The institution has developed 3 specifically designed loan products tailored to the needs of smallholder farmers, small-scale forest owners, and forestry value chain SMEs to foster agroforestry adoption, sustainable forest management, and business growth.

The organization works to increase the autonomy of vulnerable populations in Africa, Latin America, and Asia through inclusive finance, thereby contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
