About the Organization

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) envision a more equitable world where trees in all landscapes—from drylands to humid tropics—enhance the environment and well-being for all. CIFOR and ICRAF are non-profit scientific institutions that generate and apply evidence to address today's most pressing challenges, including energy insecurity, climate change, and biodiversity loss.

With a combined history of over 65 years, they have built extensive knowledge on forests and trees in agricultural landscapes (agroforestry). Through a multidisciplinary approach, they aim to improve livelihoods while protecting and restoring ecosystems. Their work focuses on innovative research, impactful partnerships, and stakeholder engagement to shape policies and practices that benefit people and the planet.

Founded in 1993 and 1978 respectively, CIFOR and ICRAF are members of CGIAR, a global research partnership dedicated to a food-secure future, poverty reduction, enhanced food and nutrition security, and improved natural resource management.

Program Background

The RESSAC program (Applied Research in Ecology and Social Sciences in Support of Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems in Central Africa) aims to generate scientific knowledge to improve sustainable forest ecosystem management in Central Africa.

Key objectives include:

• Deepening understanding of the interactions between forest ecosystems and local communities
• Developing innovative approaches to sustainable forest management
• Strengthening the capacity of local actors to manage forest resources effectively

Funded by the European Union, the program is led by CIFOR-ICRAF and comprises approximately 26 projects involving multiple institutions.
