Education System Structure

Ghana operates a formal education system structured around the 6-3-3-4 model, established through comprehensive educational reforms. The system comprises six years of primary education, three years of junior high school (JHS), three years of senior high school (SHS), and four years of university education.

Basic Education

Basic education in Ghana is free and compulsory under the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (fCUBE) program, implemented through the Education Act 2008 (Act 778). This covers:

  • Junior High School: 3 years (ages 12-14)
  • Kindergarten: 2 years (ages 4-5) - integrated into basic education

Students complete the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at the end of JHS to progress to senior high school.
