Senior Rock Mechanic (Geotechnical Engineer)

Job Purpose

To ensure the stability of underground excavations and open pit slopes through geotechnical data collection, analysis, monitoring, and design of ground support systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct geotechnical mapping, core logging (RMR, Q-system, GSI), and structural analysis of discontinuities
• Design and monitor ground support (rock bolts, shotcrete, mesh, cable bolts) for stopes, drifts, and pillars
• Install and interpret geotechnical instrumentation (extensometers, stress cells, piezometers, prism monitoring)
• Perform slope stability analysis for pit walls using software (RocScience, SLIDE, FLAC, or UDEC)
• Investigate and report on ground falls, dilution, and seismic events
• Update ground control management plans and support standards
• Train miners and supervisors in geotechnical hazard recognition

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Engineering Geology
• Master's degree in Rock Mechanics strongly preferred
• Professional registration (P.Eng., P.Geo., or CEng)

Experience Required

• 8+ years in operational rock mechanics (underground hard rock or open pit)
• Experience with numerical modeling and seismicity monitoring in deep mines

Key Competencies

• Proficiency in mapping and stereonet analysis (Dips, Unwedge)
• Practical knowledge of shotcrete and bolt testing (pull tests)
• Ability to work under time pressure in active mining areas
