About the Organization

Akagera Management Company Ltd (AMC Ltd) is a public–private partnership between African Parks Network and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), mandated to manage Akagera National Park. AMC Ltd is recruiting a Head Mechanic to lead fleet operations and mechanical services.

Position Overview

The Head Mechanic / Head of Fleet is responsible for ensuring the reliability, safety, and readiness of all park vehicles, boats, and mechanical equipment through disciplined maintenance systems, strong workshop management, and technical leadership of the mechanical team. This role requires advanced hands-on mechanical expertise, adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), accurate record keeping, and the development of junior mechanics to support uninterrupted park operations in remote and demanding field conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Maintenance Planning & Reliability

Ensure park vehicles and equipment are reliable and available for operations.

• Establish and maintain fleet maintenance schedule
• Complete scheduled servicing on time
• Minimize breakdowns, investigate incidents, and document findings
• Maintain visible maintenance status via workshop systems (boards, registers, stickers)
• Ensure SOP compliance: vehicle servicing, inspections, washing, greasing, fuel handling

Workshop Organisation, Safety & Tools

Maintain a safe, organised, and well-run workshop.

• Keep workshop clean, safe, and orderly
• Store oils and lubricants correctly according to appropriate standards
• Maintain, track, and minimize tool losses with reporting systems
• Implement tool accountability systems (personal kits, shared tools)
• Ensure SOP compliance: workshop safety, signage, electrical safety, tool control

Spare Parts & Maintenance Readiness

Prevent maintenance work delays due to missing or incorrect parts.

• Define and review minimum stock levels for spare parts
• Monitor inventory levels and ordering systems
