Organizational Background
Caritas Gikongoro is a service of Gikongoro Catholic Diocese, established in 1993, with a mission to assist vulnerable and disadvantaged communities through income generation, health improvements, socio-charitable work, and promotion of a culture of peace. The organization's vision is to foster a society where human dignity and integral development of all people are promoted according to evangelical values.
Caritas Gikongoro operates through three main departments:
- Social Department
- Health Department
- Development Department
The organization also collaborates with other diocesan services and commissions including the General Economat of Gikongoro, Catholic Schools Representation, and the Justice and Peace Commission (CDJP). Gikongoro Diocese covers the districts of Nyamagabe, a significant portion of Nyaruguru district, parts of Nyanza and Huye districts in the southern province, and Karongi in the western province.
Project Overview
From June 2024, in partnership with the Italian Bishops' Conference Committee and Service for Charitable Action in the Third World, Caritas Gikongoro is implementing a two-year project titled "Building Resilient Food Security for 500 Smallholder Farmers through Sustainable Soil Management Practices and Income Generation Opportunities" in Nyanzoga cell, Cyanika Sector, Nyamagabe district.
Project Objectives
The project aims to improve production capacity and food security for 500 small-scale farmers, with particular focus on women, through:
- Resilient agricultural practices
- Diversification of income sources
- Enhancement of capacity for 500 targeted vulnerable farmers
