Job description
Position Overview
This consultancy seeks a qualified professional to support the integration of antenatal care (ANC) and multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) into pre-service training curricula for nurses and midwives in Rwanda. This work will strengthen workforce capacity and support long-term sustainability of maternal health interventions across the country.
Background
The NOURISH initiative was launched in Rwanda to strengthen the antenatal care system and scale access to multiple micronutrient supplementation for pregnant women. The initiative supports the Government of Rwanda's transition from iron and folic acid supplementation (IFAS) to MMS nationwide.
In Rwanda, maternal nutrition challenges remain significant:
- Nearly one in four pregnant women suffers from anaemia
- 2.7% of newborns are born with low birthweight
Research demonstrates that MMS — a daily supplement containing 15 essential vitamins and minerals — is at least as effective as IFAS in preventing maternal anaemia and more effective in improving birth outcomes, including reducing low birthweight and preterm births.
Strategic Context
NOURISH builds on Rwanda's strong foundation in maternal health and nutrition by strengthening workforce capacity, supply chains, quality assurance, health information systems, and governance mechanisms. A critical enabler of long-term sustainability is integrating ANC and MMS content into pre-service training curricula for nurses and midwives, ensuring that every graduate has the knowledge and skills to deliver quality ANC and MMS supplementation.
